Week One Set up Blog & introduction & Target Behavior & Rational

My name is Rachele F and I am a psychology 1A honors student. This semester (spring 2009) I am working on a behavioral modification project for my class. For this project we were all asked to identify a behavior to modify, create a program, and monitor the results. I have decided to give up coffee for my behavioral modification. As it stands I probably on average drink about three cups of coffee a day, two at home and usually one from a speciality coffee shop. Coffee is not exactly the healthiest option nor is it the cheapest. I am also almost positive coffee is at least partly to blame for my erratic sleep schedule. For my first week I will create some baseline readings (subject of next post) and researching methods that have been effective for modifying this behavior. In my preliminary research it seems as though weaning and substitutions might be viable options (concrete plan of option will be denoted in future posts). Good Luck to all those participating!

  1. Hey Rachele, I just wanted to suggest to you a substitution which I personally use. Green Tea. If you check out this wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potential_effects_of_tea_on_health you can see all the really great health benefits of green tea. I've personally made the switch from coffee to green tea years ago and it still wakes me up in the morning just like coffee did. But unlike coffee, it doesn't give you the jittery feeling because it has about 1/2 the amount of caffeine. It's also certainly cheaper than coffee especially since you can buy green tea anywhere for really cheap and all you need is hot water.
    Good luck!

  2. Hey Rachele just a little tip for your coffee "addiction" green tea would be a good alternatives but have u considered water? Maybe even flavored water? since not only is water beneficial to your body it also benefits your skin and other body functions. also water curbs ones appetite opposed to coffee that slows down one's metabolism. hope the tips help and good luck.

  3. Hi Rachele, I also want to suggest tea as an alternative. Actually I found the following website, http://www.teabenefits.com/. This site has some interesting information on the health benefits on a variety of teas. This site even explains that recent studies show that some teas have cancer fitting properties and a lot of more interesting information. You can check it out, I think that tea instead of coffee is a good idea.

  4. Hey Rachele, I know giving up coffee isn't the easiest thing in the world. I drink it sometimes to keep me up on a long night, but the receive a crash afterwards. Like the others, I would also suggest drinking tea instead or in the morning drink natural juices. They give you energy throughout the day and are really good for you. I wish you the best of luck!
